Craft Book

Craft Book
I need to make a childrens’ book for a class final. Do you have craft ideas for a 3 page book with a cover?

Also, what is a good way to make the cover illustration? My short story is “La Nueva Escuela de Isabel” (Isabel’s New School) I need something that looks good! The visual presentation is just as important as the actual story content. It’s for an advanced Spanish class.
I have scrapbook paper, and craft supplies, I just don’t really know what to do with them. How do I put them together neat?

An easy way to bind a book is to use simply take your paper, say a 12″ x 6″ piece of cardstock. You can then fold it in half length wise so that you end up with a 6 x 6 folded piece of paper. This will be your cover. Now you can embellish the cover with your illustration, title, and name. On the back you can put a summary of the story. To make the cover look nice, I’d suggest printing out a picture onto plain cardstock then cutting it down to size & adhering it to the cover. To find some images, you can use a clip art gallery, search under school. Also, you can use Yahoo! by entering the subject on the search page and then selecting the images tab. Also, you can print out the title and name, etc and print those out on cardstock. (Just make sure your total images and text is less than 6 x 6.

For the interior, you can simply print your story in a word processing program onto plain paper and then cut those sheets down to fit inside the book.

For the actual binding, you can take the cover, punch holes in the left spine, (say 3 or 4) then punch holes on the inside pages (called signatures in bookmaking). MAKE sure that the holes won’t interfere with your cover photo, text, or inside text. Then, you can put some different ribbons through the spine & holes to have a pretty cover. You can do more detailed binding, weaving ribbon for the spine, or you can just use small binder rings.

For TONS of ideas on layouts, you can look at:

http://twopeasinabucket.com

then search the gallery for ideas.

For an easy way to do bookbinding, you can check here: http://web.diynet.com/diy/web/searchResults?searchString=bookbinding

You can also do a search on diy for mini-books. You will find great photos and details on how to bind smaller books.

Good luck!

Casting Mold
what type of plaster mix is best for casting molds from clay?

that’s the extent to the question really. we used two kinds, i can’t remember the names, one was a really hard type, and the other made the water rise to the top. We are wondering if you have found one type of plaster to be better than another?
we are making tile molds, so we can reproduce the tiles. We’re Looking for tips and suggestions on this topic and anything involving clay or ceramics.

There is ‘casting plaster’. So that would be better for casting. But there is very little difference.

Do you remember a soap craft?

In the 70s i remember my mother made some kind of soap sequin thing with a craft kit.I remember it had little pins and you stuck them in the sequins in a pattern or all over it.I remember her doing this with several different soaps and brands. It was a basically a nice smelling decoration.Has anyone heard of this? I also remember her doing it with just plain pins. I have tried typing in several differnt parameters trying to find anything on this but find nothing.Does anyone else remember this?

I do remember this. We took soap and covered it with felt to make it look like a book. Then we took straight pins and sequins and stuck them in the felt and soap. These made nice smelling freshners for your drawers.

I’ve included a website with some directions, you will need to scroll down the page to find them.

Tips on Oil Painting – Supplies

Of course, before you can start a painting you have to have a number of art supplies. There are hundreds if not thousands of supplies and gadgets related to painting and on top of that many brands to choose from. Here, we will list the most essential tools you need to create an oil painting, that is, at least the way I create such a painting. Here we go:

* Brushes – Again, there are hundreds of kinds of brushes and many different brands. But to start, you really only need a few filbert brushes of fairly good quality (if you can afford them).

   1. One large no. 10 or 12
   2. One or two no. 8′s
   3. One or two no. 6′s
   4. One small no. 2

This is more than enough. The reason I suggest filbert brushes is that they more or less combine the capabilities of a round and a flat brush. Also, the main reason we need two brushes of the same size is that we can then use two colors at the same time. That means, less brush rinsing.

* Canvas – A bunch of canvases. At this time I suggest you buy pre-stretched canvases so you can start to paint immediately. Good standard starting sizes are 16″ x 12″ or 18″x24″. You can also use canvas panels which might sometimes be cheaper depending on where you buy them.

* Easel – You need an easel to put your canvas on. Try to buy a sturdy easel. In fact, you could even make your own easel out of wood if you are a bit handy.

* Palette – I prefer to a paper palette of at least 16″x20″. I actually use an 18″x24″ which gives me even more room (that is, of course, when I paint at home). These palette sheets come in pads of 50 sheets and are not very expensive. You use them to mix your paints on.

* Paints – Yes, you do need paints! Try to buy tubes containing at least 37 ml of paint. Some brands have tubes of 200 ml and for certain colors (such as white) they may even offer larger containers. The totality of tube colors you use is also called a palette. As a starting palette I suggest the following colors:

      1. Lemon Yellow
      2. Cadmium Yellow
      3. Cadmium Red
      4. Permanent Rose
      5. French Ultramarine
      6. Phthalo Blue (Red Shade)
      7. Titanium White
      8. Ivory Black

Of course, as you get more experience, you can add some tube colors. However, when you start out it is probably best to use as few colors as possible. The above colors let you produce very clean secondary colors and all sorts of tertiary ones as well. Secondary colors are colors that are made with two colors and tertiary ones are colors that are made with three colors.

* Turpentine – If you use real oil paints then you need at least a quart of turpentine or a substitute. If you use water soluble oil paints then all you need is regular water.

* Odds and Ends – If you use real oil paints you need a small container of linseed oil. You could also get a can of retouch varnish spray. And finally, also a few rolls of paper towel.

This is about the minimum you need to start oil painting. As stated before, there are many more tools to be had. I suggest going to a few art stores and see what they have. You can even check out some of the Internet stores and maybe purchase some of the tools that particularly useful to you.
