You can save a ton of money when decorating your bedroom by making your own décor and furnishings for the room. Not only can you save money by doing this but it is a great way to get unique pieces that are specific to your taste and style.

Here are some different ideas for making your own bedroom décor and furnishings that won’t cost a lot of money and are not that hard to make.

There are several different items in the bedroom that you can sew with a simple sewing machine. I use a Brother sewing machine that cost me less than $200 and it works perfect for these types of projects.

Accent pillows for your bed can easily be sewn with just about any type of fabric you choose. If you go into a store you probably notice that these pillows can cost you anywhere from $10 – $50 and they come in limited colors and patterns. By making your own accent pillows you can save hundreds of dollars and have your choose of color and pattern that fits your bedroom perfectly.

Another item that you can sew for your bed is a dust ruffle. These are actually quite easy to make and can easily accent your bed and hide any items that you may be storing under your bed. You can even find material for your dust ruffle that matches your accent pillows to keep your whole bed coordinated.

Drapes or other window coverings can also be sewn with a basic sewing machine. Drapes and valances are actually one of the easiest items to sew so even if you are a beginner you can still make these items yourself. Find fabric on sale and you can save a lot of money with your window coverings, which can definitely set the tone of your bedroom.

If you are not into sewing, there are still other bedroom décor items that you can make. For example, you take a picture and have it blown up to frame it on your wall. Take a few close ups of flowers or other nature pieces and place the frames strategically on the bedroom wall for a beautiful collage piece.

Take a simple bulletin board and stretch fabric over it and staple it or nail it on the back. This is a great way to make your own personal bulletin board that is also a decoration for your bedroom. You can also find smaller bulletins board and do this and make a collage of them on your wall with complimentary fabrics.
